The physicist, astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher Gustave Adolphe Hirn (1815–1890) is Colmar's great scholar. The application of his research in thermodynamics and oil technology made him one of the pioneers of modern industry. The bronze statue depicts the institute member at his lectern. Created by Auguste Bartholdi, the statue was unveiled in 1894, just four years after the scientist's death.

Initially a chemist at a factory in Logelbach, he researched the workings of steam engines. Through his work, he succeeded in determining the mechanical equivalent of the calorie.

At this location, you can find Gustave Adolphe Hirn, a physician, astronomer, inventor, and philosopher (1815-1890), the greatest scientist in Colmar's long history.
