Pierre De Geyter was the composer of "The Internationale", the song that was proclaimed by the Second International in 1892 as the official battle song of the movement. Until 1944 it was also the national anthem of the Soviet Union.
The original text comes from the "French communard" Eugène Pottier (initially to the tune of The Marseillaise). The text can be read on the wall plaque next to the statue of De Geyter.
