The sacking of Speyer in 1689 left hardly any remains of secular buildings. All that remains of the bishop's palace next to the cathedral is a stump of a stair tower; a Gothic archway remains of the town hall; Gothic window arches from a residential building were uncovered during renovations in the facade of the Church of the Holy Spirit; and a Renaissance stair tower can still be found in Spitalgasse.
