The (re)establishment of half (open) habitats of the inland dunes and shifting sand fields is one of the measures of the project "Lifeline Upper Rhine - Natural diversity from wet to dry". The sandy areas and dunes near Dudenhofen had mostly been lost as sandy grassland and inland dune habitats due to bush encroachment and pine trees. The extreme conditions on such dunes and sandy areas, such as the extreme drought, heat and lack of nutrients, only allow highly specialized animals and plants to settle here.

The Dudenhofen inland dunes border directly on the Speyer ant hump.
For the most part overgrown with forest, there are some places where the dune sand is visible. There is a heather with Calluna Vulgaris and silver grass.

In Central Europe, inland dunes and drifting sand fields are spatially separated from the coastal dunes on the North and Baltic Sea coasts. These are aeolian formations made of sand, i.e. H. they were originally created by the wind. They were mostly blown up under cold-climatic, periglacial conditions at the end of the Weichselian or Würm Ice Age, a little more than 10,000 years ago. Their development in the post-glacial period is largely due to human influence.
