Arucas is the third largest city in Gran Canaria and the birthplace of Canarian rum. It is worth strolling through the beautiful old town and enjoying the city in one of the many street cafes or in one of the squares.

Arucas is located 12 km from the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The municipality stretches from the coast to the Medianías, the "middle lands", in the interior of the island, up to an altitude of 600 m. The town centre of Arucas is a listed building. The most important building is the parish church of San Juan Bautista, built entirely by local master stonemasons from Arucas stone. The church dates from 1909 and has beautiful windows by the French company Maumejean et Frères and paintings by the Canarian painter Cristobal Hernández de Quintana. It also houses a remarkable carved reclining Christ figure by the local sculptor Manuel Ramos.
