As suggested in some of the highlights comments here, it matters which way you circumnavigate the caldera - going clockwise should be a lot easier than the other way around!

The path is basically not extremely difficult to walk, but you should have sturdy shoes with usable soles (a lot of lava grit). Sticks are not necessary, but useful!

      Directions

between the stone walls the path leads down into the caldera. Below we come across a crumbling homestead on a eucalyptus tree. A dilapidated tree press bears witness to better times. After our round through the lush vegetation we climb up again. At the top we go left to the golf course, along the edge of which we get to the upper circuit.

        Hello everyone,

We did the tour today with small children. Given the comments, I almost gave up. The tour is very nice when it's not too hot.

I'll describe the route so that anyone interested can get an idea.

Anyone who has ever been skiing in the Alps needs to have a head for heights to do this tour. It is a ridge path that is 2-3m wide at the narrowest points. Only in one, a few meter long, section does it go down vertically on one side. Everywhere else it is just steep slopes. In places the path runs on loose, small lava gravel, which can make you drift. It is downhill but not so steep that you can't stop. This makes it a bit more strenuous going uphill. There are stairs in the steepest places, but they are not well maintained, which means that it would probably be better to walk without them in some places.
