    Tegetthoff monument, Vienna
The Tegetthoff monument in Vienna was designed by Carl Kundmann (statue) and Carl von Hasenauer (architecture) and commemorates Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, vice admiral and commander of the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian navies in the 1860s. It stands, unveiled on September 21, 1886, on the Praterstern at the end of Praterstrasse in the 2nd district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt, at one of the most important traffic junctions in the city of Vienna.
Planning for the memorial began in 1871, the year Tegetthoff died, but for a long time no agreement was reached on the location. In 1872 a competition was announced. A total of 24 sculptors took part, of which the Swiss Ferdinand Schlöth, who worked in Rome, emerged as the winner with his design. Carl Kundmann, who himself was a member of the jury as a representative of the Vienna Academy and therefore could not submit a draft, intrigued against the winner until a draft was ordered from him, which was ultimately determined to be executed. The question of location also led to discussions. Originally it was planned to erect the monument in front of the Votive Church. It finally found its place at the Praterstern, where it was unveiled on September 21, 1886. The location ultimately chosen guaranteed maximum pedestrian frequency thanks to the neighboring Nordbahnhof, Vienna's most important train station at the time, and the nearby Wurstelprater, the city's large amusement park.
The monument was unveiled 20 years after Tegetthoff's greatest success, the victory in the naval battle of Lissa, in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

This huge monument sits enthroned between the roaring traffic and the tram terminus.

The reference to the victorious battle of Lissa under Tegetthoff with a fleet equipped worse than the Italians is on the monument.
