As one of Stralsund's three city ponds, the Knieperteich also served as part of the city's fortifications. The ponds were artificially expanded in the 13th century so that the old town was given an island location that was easier to defend.
Today we can stroll, hike and cycle in the beautiful park. Rowing boats can also be launched in the northern part. The view over the water surface is simply picturesque from many places all year round.
