Giant sequoias (California)

The rainforests along the North American Pacific coast are among the most impressive habitats on Earth. They are dominated by various coniferous tree species, which are characterized by extraordinary vitality and productivity. Particularly fascinating are the giant sequoias, which often reach up to 100 meters in height.

Right at the entrance, the view falls on seven huge sequoias, which tower up at the first fork in the path. A memorial to Loki Schmidt, who died in 2010, is protected under the sequoias. The Botanical Garden was named in 2012 after the experienced and passionate botanist, who received an honorary doctorate from the Department of Biology in 2000 for her commitment to nature conservation.
