Already mentioned in 1426. Originally a guesthouse or inn with appurtenances; from 1713 to the present in use as a pharmacy. In 1659 (date on the top floor) the building was thoroughly restored and got its current appearance. Restoration in 1923, with adaptation of the ground floor to the Kapelstraat. Important example of Maas style with preserved upper part in style and frame work.

This is one of the most famous houses in Hasselt, because it is a very rich half-timbered house in Maasland style. It is named after a sign, which shows a sword in a gloved fist. This was the symbol of the apothecaries.
