The square was created in the period 1807-1812 and was initially called Place Impériale and Place des Invalides.
It was built by city architect Charles-François de Rare. The main entrances of the Pope's College and the Maria-Theresia College are located on the square. A statue of André Dumont has stood on the square itself since 1922. From 1838, markets for, among other things, ironware were organized on the square, as a result of which the square was popularly known as the Pottekensmarkt. In the 1920s poultry was traded, giving the square the nickname Kiekenmarkt.

The Hogeschoolplein was created on the site of the buildings of the pedagogy 'Het Varcken' and the Standonckcollege. The idea to create a public space between the Lakenhalle on the Naamsestraat and the Pauscollege on the 's Meiersstraat arose as early as 1786, at the time of the expansion of the Pauscollege.

However, fierce protest from the population ensured that the project was shelved for almost a quarter of a century. At the beginning of the 19th century, under the leadership of city architect C.-F. de Rare, the plans for the construction of a square for the Pauscollege were given a new chance in the form of redevelopment of the now dilapidated neighbourhood.

On the orders of the city council, almost all buildings of 'Het Varcken' and the Standonckcollege were demolished. The freed-up, almost rectangular space was levelled and centrally provided with a lawn, lined with trees.

The development around the square, with the Pope's College as an eye-catcher, would combine 18th-century buildings on the east and south sides with new-build homes that were built on the west and north sides of the square during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Hogeschoolplein is therefore not the result of a global construction project, such as the planned construction of the Rijschoolstraat in 1838, but rather the fruit of individual initiatives that were subject to strict urban building regulations and formal requirements. What is unique about the Hogeschoolplein is the fact that the urban development concept, the construction and the landscaping have been so well preserved over the years. The Hogeschoolplein is a characteristic example of a neoclassical square in which the construction, planting and construction were consciously coordinated.
