FROM “ARGENTORATUM” TO STRASBOURG, THE JANUS FOUNTAIN SYMBOLIZES 2000 YEARS OF HISTORY.
“Argentoratum”, the old name of Strasbourg, was in fact a Roman camp whose remains of the ramparts are located near the fountain.

In a small green area on the north-eastern edge of Place Broglie is the approximately 5 meter high Janus Fountain, designed by the Strasbourg artist Tomi Ungerer. The work of art was created in 1988 to mark the city's 2000th anniversary. Brick round arches frame the head of the Roman god Janus, who appears to be rising out of the water.
