The history of the old customs house of Strasbourg begins in 1358 with the construction of a building called "Salzhof". An old letter shows that salt was already stored here around 1143 for shipment to the Vosges.
In 1401 a part became an inn and the rest were storage rooms for goods from outside that were charged with tolls. This has enabled Strasbourg to achieve steady prosperity over the centuries.

The imposing former department store on Rabenbrücke is now a good restaurant and was a warehouse for taxable products in the Middle Ages. The house was built in 1358 and was the trading center of Strasbourg until the 18th century. The former customs house was badly damaged by the bombing raids of the German Wehrmacht during World War II and was only rebuilt in its previous style in 1956. On the restaurant terrace you have a fantastic view over the Ill and the Quai Saint-Nicolas.
