It is interesting to read and see how this tunnel system was used to supply water to the castle

The Tiergarten Tunnel is a 150 m long tunnel built in 1468/1469 through the ridge of the same name next to Blankenheim Castle. The water from the source "In der Rhenn" flowed through it in a dyke line about one kilometer long to the castle. It is remarkable that hardly any such buildings are known in Europe from this period. The tunnel was built using the qanat method and has five construction shafts. To overcome a depression between the source and the tunnel hole, the route section was designed as a pressure line made of wooden pipes. The complex was only rediscovered and uncovered in 1997. In 2001, the Rhenish Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments had the fountain room excavated, archaeologically examined and restored. Parts of the tunnel are accessible. The "Tiergarten Tunnel Trail" takes you to 18 themed stations in the Blankenheim Urft Valley. Source: Wikipedia
