Between 1907 and 1991, the museum was located in the Gothic St. Michael's Chapel. Between 1990 and 1993/94, a contemporary museum building was built on a site between the two Butzbach castles. Butzbach is particularly proud of the "world's largest collection of shoe miniatures" owned by Richard and Emilie Fenchel. This found its way into the Guinness Book of Records as the largest of its kind.
