The current bridge has been there since July 13, 1974. Before that there was a fixed stone bridge (from 1938), a swing bridge and the first known bridge was a double drawbridge.

Due to increasing car traffic, it was decided in the 1930s to construct a permanent stone bridge for car traffic. As a result, the port lost its function and subsequently lay like a 'dead pool of water' in the center of Goes for forty years. Due to the continued increase in car traffic, calls eventually arose to fill in the entire port and turn it into a parking lot. However, the municipality decided differently in the early 1970s and wanted to convert the harbor into a marina. The old bridge was demolished and the current drawbridge took its place.

On the divorce J.A. van der Goeskade / Kleine Kade, the Sint Maartenpoort, also called the Donkere Poort, was located until 1853. On the other side of the bridge was the East Gate (see tiles in the sidewalks). From here you have a beautiful view of the city harbor, which was dug around 1200. Looking at the other side you can see the course of the creek on which Goes was founded as a settlement. From the 15th to the 17th century, approximately one hundred salt chains and five madder ovens stood on either side of this harbor entrance.

For your information: a salt shed is a workshop equipped with a cooking device for evaporating a concentrated salt solution and allowing the salt to crystallize, as a production and refining technique. Salt was (and still is) an essential product for preserving and transporting fish.

What is madder? Madder was previously used as a raw material for the red dyes alizarin and purpurin. In addition, madder is also attributed a medicinal effect.

The Sint Maartensbrug is a drawbridge over the city harbor in Goes. Several bridges bore this name. The current bridge has been standing since July 13, 1974. Before that there was a fixed stone bridge (from 1938), a swing bridge and the first known bridge was a double drawbridge. Due to the increase in car traffic, it was decided in the 1930s to use car traffic until a permanent stone bridge was built. As a result, the port lost its function and for forty years lay like a dead pool in the center of Goes. Due to the ever-increasing car traffic, there were finally voices to fill in the entire harbor and convert it into a parking lot. However, the municipality decided otherwise in the early 1970s and wanted to convert the port into a marina. The old bridge was demolished and the current drawbridge was replaced.
