The Grote Kerk or Maria Magdalena Church was built in the Late Gothic style.

Historical interpretation: This church was already mentioned in 1216. At the end of the 15th century the church building already had the same shape as it does today. The church was renovated after 1618 when a fire started due to the carelessness of a slater. The tower on the west side of the church was replaced by a crossing tower during the reconstruction of the church. It is assumed that the castle chapel of the former Ostend Castle previously stood on this site.

The Pater Damiaan parish - Holy Mary Magdalene Church is a Roman Catholic church building in Goes, LOCATED at Singelstraat 9 OPPOSITE the PROTESTANT Grote or Maria Magdalena Church. See other highlight komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/3813399

History: Catholics worshiped from 1815 in a church building that made way for the current parsonage in 1909. In 1905-1908 a new church was built in neo-Gothic style. Architects were Albert Margry, Jos Margry and Jos Snickers.

The tower was restored in 1989.

Building: It is a neo-Gothic, brick three-aisled cruciform church. To the left of the front facade is a square tower with four protruding corner turrets and a high, eight-sided spire. The celebration is special, which is crowned by an eight-sided dome.

The interior is covered by wooden barrel vaults which are polychromed. The stained glass windows were made in the studio of F. Nicolas. The neo-Gothic church furniture comes from the studios of Margry and Snickers and dates from the time of construction. P. Geeraerts painted the murals from 1940 onwards. Some older objects, from the former 19th century church, are also present: statues of saints, the Stations of the Cross, a mission cross and the high altar, which is now located in a separate chapel.

CLARIFICATION, apparently there is confusion about both churches that are directly opposite each other here. This highlight describes the Roman Catholic "Father Damien Parish - Saint Mary Magdalene"

The church on the other side is the Protestant Stg. Maria Magdalena Church Goes.
