The Silbersee was created when brown coal mining ended in the mid-1930s. The remaining holes in the opencast mines slowly filled with water as the groundwater rose again.
The Silbersee used to belong to the “Donatus Pit” opencast mine. It was named after the commercial councilor Adolf Silverberg, who founded the Fortuna union, a corporation in the mining law sense, in 1898.
The 2.2 hectare large and 4.5 m deep lake is under landscape protection. Protected spawning zones have been set up here all year round, which may not be entered or fished for.
