The Donatussee belongs to the area of the Villeseen in the nature park Rhineland. Within a radius of a few hundred meters there are several other lakes: in the north Upper, Middle and Lower Seas, in the east the Villenhofer Maar, in the south the Zwillingssee. With a depth of 15 meters, Lake Donatus is the deepest of the Villeseen.
The lake itself is under protection of the landscape. Here, all year round protected spawning zones for amphibians and protection and rest areas for other animals are set up, which may not be entered. The steep bank banks are covered by a reed belt. Swimming and water sports are prohibited, but fishing and diving is generally allowed
