Ilsestein (HWN 030)

Waterfalls, unspoilt beech forests and rugged rock scenery characterize the gorge section of the Ilsetal from Ilsenburg up to the Ilse Falls. It is one of the most beautiful Harz valleys. Following the signposted hiking trail, you will reach the Ilsestein rock formation with its summit cross, which towers about 150 meters vertically out of the valley and is an ingenious vantage point.

Stamping point 30 of the Harzer hiking nobility is located at the entrance.

"On the tower-like top of the rock stands a big iron cross, and if need be, there is room for four human feet." (Heinrich Heine) About three kilometers from Ilsenburg rises high above the Ilsetal the legendary Ilsestein. On the summit of the rock, which lies 474 meters above sea level, stands the large cast-iron cross, of which Heine already enthused. The ascent to the cross is not without danger. Therefore please be careful. On top of the rock next to the cross, there is no railing or other safety devices.

That's a challenge, a mega trail that I climbed twice from Ilse Stein to Ilse, next time I'll try it from below.
But please do not take it lightly, it is extremely steep.

Below the Ilse Kreuz, the small crippled pine grows directly on the slope.
With the Patanosterklippe and denm chunks in the background a great motif.
The rocks form a natural resting place that forces you to linger🤗✌️

Next to the path to the Ilsekreuz, a small path goes parallel to it.
Those who struggle through the thorny scrub can still discover the remains of the foundations of the old Ilsestein Castle.

Fantastic cliff with a panoramic view of Ilsenburg and the Ilse valley.

But there is nothing to complain about, no matter where you go or down, everything is great prospects.

Great view to Ilsenburg

In a beautiful ago, old trailer, you can buy small food, drinks, as well as postcards and stamps. At the block hut you can throw it in immediately.
The snack bar is open Friday-Sunday from 1.00-18.00.
Mrs. Fischer is currently ill. Therefore, it is currently closed on Feitag.

A place with a beautiful view of the village Ilsenburg and the mountains all around.
And by the way Ilsestein, not Ilsenstein and unfortunately most photos have nothing to do with the Ilsestein.

Although it is difficult to climb to the cross but worth the view. Unfortunately, the restaurant is only open on weekends.
