Waterfalls, unspoilt beech forests and rugged rock scenery characterize the gorge section of the Ilsetal from Ilsenburg up to the Ilse Falls. It is one of the most beautiful Harz valleys. Following the signposted hiking trail, you will reach the Ilsestein rock formation with its summit cross, which towers about 150 meters vertically out of the valley and is an ingenious vantage point.

Stamping point 30 of the Harzer hiking nobility is located at the entrance.

"On the tower-like top of the rock stands a big iron cross, and if need be, there is room for four human feet." (Heinrich Heine) About three kilometers from Ilsenburg rises high above the Ilsetal the legendary Ilsestein. On the summit of the rock, which lies 474 meters above sea level, stands the large cast-iron cross, of which Heine already enthused. The ascent to the cross is not without danger. Therefore please be careful. On top of the rock next to the cross, there is no railing or other safety devices.
