Waterfalls, unspoilt beech forests and rugged rock scenes characterize the gorge section of the Ilse valley from Ilseburg up to the Ilse falls. It is one of the most beautiful Harz valleys. Following the signposted hiking trail, you will reach the rock formation Ilsestein with a summit cross, which rises approximately 150 meters vertically from the valley, a brilliant vantage point.
Stamp 30 of the Harzer hiking pin is located at the entrance.

"On the tower-like top of the rock stands a big iron cross, and if need be, there is room for four human feet." (Heinrich Heine) About three kilometers from Ilsenburg rises high above the Ilsetal the legendary Ilsestein. On the summit of the rock, which lies 474 meters above sea level, stands the large cast-iron cross, of which Heine already enthused. The ascent to the cross is not without danger. Therefore please be careful. On top of the rock next to the cross, there is no railing or other safety devices.
