Würzburger Gate

The Würzburg Gate has been preserved as one of three gates - but one floor lower than originally built: In 1680 the second floor was removed and the roof turned. 26 steep steps lead to the rooms where hall workers and night watchmen once lived.The "free apartment on the Würzburg gate tower" was part of the reward for their services: These were "to announce the hours of the night, to intervene against night owls and to guard against the risk of fire and theft". markt-einersheim.de/de/freizeit-tourismus/wandernEvery hour on the hour, one of the ten street lamps would sound like the night watchman singing – for example at 11 p.m. (or 11 a.m.): “Listen, gentlemen, let us tell you, our clock has struck 11. 11 of the disciples remained faithful, let there be no waste!
