The most monumental statue in Dendermonde is that in honor of Father Pieter-Jan De Smet, missionary and bringer of peace to the Indians in North America. This statue was erected in 1878 opposite the southern side entrance of the Church of Our Lady.

At the age of twenty, philosophy student Pieter-Jan De Smet left for the United States as a missionary. His missionary work with the Indians in Missouri began there in 1837.

Over the years he founded many missions and won the trust of the Potowatomies, the Flatheads, the Kalispels, the Primhearts and the Sioux. The American government also recognized his great influence and charged him with several peacekeeping missions.
