The Sint-Onolfsdijk is located northwest of the city of Dendermonde and follows the Scheldt. Until 1968-1978, the dike extended to the city until it was intersected by the re-canalised Dender and a new Dender estuary and tidal lock were built.

The dike was popularly known as Kolendijk or Notendijk, referring to the cultivation of red and white cabbage during the First World War and the walnut trees on the dike, which have since disappeared. The extensive and underlying Sint-Onolfspolder, bordered by the Scheldt, covers an area from Dendermonde to Appels, the boundaries of which were definitively established by MB of 05.02.1987.

      Did you know that you...

The Sint-Onolfsdijk is also popularly called Kolendijk or Notendijk. The name 'Kolendijk' refers to the period before World War 1, when red and white cabbages were grown on a large scale in the polder. The name 'Notendijk' refers to the numerous walnut trees that are planted here.
