The Schaffensepoort is the only preserved city gate. It was originally formed by the guardhouse with an adjoining postern and two casemated flank batteries in the main rampart and a second postern with adjoining, identical batteries in the lower rampart. The flank batteries in the main rampart were demolished during the diversion of the Demer in the main moat. Towards the city, the Schaffensepoort shows a rectangular brick and bluestone facade front (28 x 6 m), flanked by perpendicular, sloping retaining walls. A monumental, bluestone round-arched gate, inscribed in a risalit-shaped projection, lined by piers and cornice also made of bluestone, divides the facade into the two symmetrical halves of the guardhouse.Inventory of Immovable Heritage: 19th-century defence belt Diest, id.erfgoed.net/erfgoedobjecten/126646

Great with kids because there are many loops, so you can easily extend or shorten the walk
