De Leunen is what remains of the once much larger and botanically very renowned Zelem swamp. It is now a valuable valley center with beautiful shrubs, swamps, swamp forests, ponds and colorful meadows. The Leunen marsh, also known as the "Marais de Zeelhem", was the favorite excursion site for botanists 100 years ago and even today it is home to characteristic flora, such as snake root, water hemlock, gale and many sedge species.
