After its time as an aristocratic residence, Marquardt became a bourgeois property in 1860. From 1870 the castle was temporarily owned by the representative of the Krupp company. In 1932 the castle was leased to the hotel company Kempinski and housed the "Hotel Schloss Marquardt".
At the beginning of World War II, the site was confiscated and served as a reserve hospital. Various uses followed after the end of the war.
