When you walk along the edge of this beautiful heath valley, you don't think you're on the edge of Geesthacht in the city forest, but rather somewhere far away from civilization. A beautiful piece of earth.

About a quarter of the urban area of Geesthacht is forested. The city forest includes two large forest areas with a total of approx. 240 hectares of forest. The Heidberge extend from the western town limits to the Ziegenkrug. They are about 110 hectares in size. The Besenhorster Sandberge (approx. 130 ha) are located in the northeastern part of the city.

The edge of the Geesthang in the west of the city area was forest-free and used as heath (Heidberge) until the 1950s. Planned reforestation with pines, spruces and birches have created this green belt and local recreation area.

In addition to recreation, the Heidberge are also used for nature conservation, groundwater and soil protection. Forest use is planned, but it should be done in such a way that none of these functions are permanently impaired.

In the long term, the Geesthacht forest is to be developed into a near-natural forest typical of the Heidberge, in which deciduous trees (mainly beech and oak) dominate.

The Hohes Elbufer hiking trail (W30) also runs along here, which I can highly recommend at this point. All information about the hiking trail can be found under the following link: wanderjugend.de/deutsche-wanderjugend/jugendwanderwege/die-jugendwanderwege/norddeutschland/hohes-elbufer (as of May 1, 2024).
