The statue 'The Frenchman' is a tribute to the hundreds of Flemish seasonal workers who left property and goods for a living and, especially in France, did heavy labor in the beet harvest.

With their 'bouzache' on their shoulders, they moved from the station in Burst to Tourcoing, from where they swarmed to the French farmers via 'Le Bureau d'Immigration'. Due to the large number of seasonal workers, Heldergem was given the name 'Fransmandorp'. In 1900, Heldergem had more than 200 seasonal workers, approximately 16% of the total population.

De Somer portrayed the seasonal worker beautifully: a little weak at the knees from the hard work, but still with a smile.
