"In many places, water drainage is very slow. For example, a swamp is formed in the Duivenbos where many rare swamp plants and animals find a home." it can be read on the Natuurpunt information board.
People have been warned: it can be quite swampy here. During my passage at the end of November 2023, you couldn't get through without gaiters or boots, unless you wanted to continue the rest of the walk with wet feet :-)

The name "Duivenbos" may be a corruption of "Duivelsbos". However, the area used to be important for the village community of Sint-Antelinks. During the war the forest served as a shelter. But people also went there to collect wood and practice small-scale agriculture. Sheep grazed in the area. The small landscape elements that remain from that time are very useful ecologically. You see fragments of it in and around the nature reserve: sunken roads, roadsides, wooded edges, hedges, ponds, ditches, slopes and graves. The fountain along the red walk was previously used by villagers to fetch water. Now toads and frogs live there.

The Duivenbos is a nature reserve in the Denderstreek in South-East Flanders (Belgium). The 11-hectare nature reserve is located on the territory of the municipality of Herzele (sub-municipality of Sint-Antelinks). The nature reserve is managed by Natuurpunt Denderstreek and is part of the Flemish Ecological Network.
