The Monopteros is a World Heritage Site in the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom. From its lofty spot it is the center of several visual axes in the park.

The Ionian Temple (also Monopteros) was built between 1781 and 1786 according to a design by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff north of Georgium Castle on a gently sloping surface. It is the central starting point for numerous lines of sight in the Georgengarten and the highlight of the western part of the park. This makes it one of the most important park architectures in the Georgengarten. The extensive landscape park was created between 1780 and 1806 in the vicinity of the classicist country house that Prince Johann Georg, younger brother of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau, built from 1780 north of Dessau by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff.
After considerable damage, extensive repairs were carried out on the Ionian Temple in 1984/85. The original wooden beam was replaced by a beam made of precast reinforced concrete and the dome was made of wood again, but as a hemisphere and with a copper layer.
In the course of time there has been an increasing number of settlements and distortions on the steps, and further damage has been recorded in the area of the dome and the architrave resting on the pillars. Extensive renovation measures were therefore carried out on the Ionian Temple between 2018 and 2020. In the first construction phase, the considerable damage to the step system was removed. After the steps had been removed, they were relocated on a newly installed reinforced concrete foundation, and defects and joints were professionally repaired and restored. With the renewal of the paint in the second section, the renovation measures could be completed in 2020, the Ionian Temple shines in fresh splendor.

Inspired by trips to England and Italy, the designers of the Georgengarten created an English-style park at the end of the 18th century. The principle of the gradual transition from the artistically landscaped garden to the natural landscape is impressively comprehensible in the complex. A highlight is the small pavilion.
