After the transfer of their rights to the Matthias Church, which they shared, in 1896, the Catholic parish in Bad Sobernheim began building their own parish church. Under the direction of the Mainz architect and master builder Ludwig Becker, the St. Matthäuskirche was built in the neo-Gothic style in the short construction period from spring 1898 to autumn of the following year.

Since September 20th, 2015 it shines in new splendor: A thorough interior renovation was carried out.

In 1896, the two parishes of Sobernheim ended the shared use of St. Matthias Church, a practice that had existed since the late 17th century. The Catholics were compensated with a redemption payment and committed to moving into a new church building by the end of 1898. After plans to expand the Maltese Chapel fell through, planning began for a new building in the parish garden.
