The church, dating from the 14th century, is one of the most important church buildings in Drenthe and is classified as a national monument. It is a church without a tower, but it does have a very attractive ridge turret.
It is unknown when the church in Eelde was built. A deed of sale from 1139 shows that it exists. This church is built of tuff stone and has a more or less rectangular shape and a built-in tower.
