The monument to Johann Baptist Lingg, inaugurated on November 8, 1896, is located on Linggplatz in Bad Hersfeld. Johann Baptist Lingg went down in the town's history books as the "Man from Hersfeld" and the "savior of the city".

The memorial to the Baden officer Lingg von Linggenfeld, who saved Hersfeld from destruction in 1807, has stood since November 8, 1896, on the edge of Linggplatz and next to the entrance to the monastery district, surrounded by old trees and half-timbered houses.
Right next to it stands the "Vitalis Cross", erected by the citizens of the city of Hersfeld in memory of the events of the Vitalis Night (April 27/28, 1378) as a memorial and atonement cross at the point where the knight Eberhard von Engern was at the top of his fellow combatants wanted to storm the city and was shot by an arrow. Across the arms of the cross we read the inscription - only with difficulty because of the severe weathering
ANNO DOMINI MCCCLXXVIII
on the widening foot follows
ISTIC HERSFELDIS FUIT TRADITA POST VITALIS
This atonement cross shown here is a replica, the original is in the Bad Hersfeld Municipal Museum.
