In the vicinity of the wet heath there are even larger alder and moor birch forests. The Haus Bürgel biological station, which is responsible for the area, works with the Mettmann district and the city of Hilden to maintain the heathland. The 9-hectare Sandberg Nature Reserve, designated ME-035, is located east of the city of Hilden in the Mettmann district.
