Why is this church, the second oldest church in Amsterdam, called the (Sint) Olofskapel? According to some, it was built for Norwegian sailors and was therefore named after the Norwegian king Olof, who converted to Christianity around the year 1000. A more likely story tells that it concerns the Brabant Saint Odulphus, the patron saint of dikes. The Sint Olofskapel is indeed located on a former dike, the Zeedijk.
A Jerusalem chapel was added in the 15th century. Jerusalem chapels were meeting points for pilgrims who had visited Jerusalem. That gave a special status, just like with Muslims who visited Mecca. After the alteration in 1578, the church was given other functions, such as a merchant's fair. The Jerusalem Chapel was demolished. Nowadays the Olofskapel conference center of the Barbizon hotel is just around the corner.
