In view of the approaching threat from the rapid advance of the Allies in France, Hitler ordered the Westwall to be prepared for defense on August 30, 1944. From September 1944, digging therefore also took place here in the Bienwald. Prisoners of war, employees from companies up to the Ludwigshafen area, inhabitants of rear villages, young and old, everyone was mobilized to dig anti-tank ditches and field positions with pickaxes and shovels.
