In view of the approaching threat from the rapid advance of the Allies in France, Hitler ordered the defense readiness of the Siegfried Line on August 30, 1944. From September 1944, digging took place here in the Bienwald. Prisoners of war, workforces from companies up to and including the Ludwigshafen area, residents of backward villages, young people and the elderly, everything was called out to dig anti-tank trenches and field positions with pick and shovel.
