The first mention of a Protestant congregation in Kempen goes back to August 1543, a year later a Anabaptist congregation is found here. Another year later, Albert Hardenberg, the first evangelical pastor, was introduced to Kempen. Only after several centuries of alternating persecution and freedom of belief can the first Protestant church on the corner of Burgstrasse and Engerstrasse be consecrated on November 25, 1846. A plot of land on the corner of Aldekerker and Wachtendonker Strasse can be purchased for the construction of a new church; the Mülheim architect Heinrich Heidsiek has been won over as the master builder. The foundation stone was laid on April 25, 1909, and the St. Thomas Church was inaugurated on July 17, 1910.Source: wikipedia
