The stately corner house was built in 1714, when Kempen began to recover from decades of war suffering. Its builder must therefore have been a citizen who was still wealthy and optimistic.
The initials HD and MH above the entrance to the butter market could provide clues to him and his wife. But they have not yet been deciphered.
The distinctive character of the house is enhanced by certain irregularities. The gable spans only part of the facade at the Buttermarkt, which leads to asymmetries in its structure (for example in the number of windows on both sides of the middle door). During the restoration (1977), the second door to the butter market was broken down to replace an old, bricked-up one.
At the location of the shop window facing Kuhstrasse, there used to be a passage leading to the backyard. There was a huge oven in a half-timbered extension. His tradition lives on in today's bakery shop.
