Bike Touring Highlight
The Solbad Raffelberg is a former farm and former Solbad in the district Speldorf in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Today there are, among others, the Theater an der Ruhr and the Raffelbergpark.
In 1855, miners from the Alstaden coal mine encountered a salty, 26 ° C source of salt - relics of a primeval sea. The iodine-containing brine quickly became popular with the pals. They built tubs on the spot and bathed in front of the shift. When finally in 1884 a much larger spring was discovered, a brine bath was built shortly thereafter on the colliery.
When the plans became concrete, relocating Alstaden from Mülheim to Oberhausen, it was decided to relocate the brine to Speldorf. The city of Mülheim founded the joint stock company Solbad Raffelberg with local companies and on 16 April 1908 bought the 30 acres (75,000 m²) estate Raffelberg, where since 1888 a children's sanatorium was located.
After a construction period of 13 months, the bathing operation was opened under the protection of the goddess Hygieia on May 15, 1909. The brine was pumped through a 2.5-kilometer pipeline from the mine to Speldorf. The design of the entrance pavilion was carried out by the architects Arthur Pfeifer and Hans Großmann, while the other buildings were named the Mülheim building director Karl Helbing. For the garden park Raffelberg designed by the garden architect Walter von Engelhardt, around 37,000 m² of forest were cleared. On 31 December 1911 the 800-seat Kursaal was opened.
When March 31, 1973, the Alstaden colliery closed and the brine failed, they first rose to artificial brine. However, as this did not meet with great approval, natural brine was brought by tanker from the Zeche Concordia in Oberhausen.
Due to decreasing number of treatments, the brine bath was closed in 1992.
