The cross-border geopath Ternell stretches from the hill valley south of Eupen (East Belgium) to the High Fens west of Mützenich. The oldest rocks in the Eifel from the Cambrian to the Devonian are exposed on this educational trail.

New landscape forms emerged from the interaction of weathering processes and simultaneous movements in the earth's crust. This is how the Ardennes began to rise in the Tertiary period, a process that is still ongoing today. Due to the uplift, the rivers carved their way into the Ardennes, which had been completely leveled until then. A hilly low mountain range landscape cut up by deep valleys emerged from the former flat plateau.
