On the Rhine, opposite the Konstanz district of Niederburg, lies an island just 246 meters long and 100 meters wide. A Dominican monastery was founded here in 1235/36.

Jan Hus was imprisoned in the monastery's dungeon from December 6, 1414, to March 24, 1415, during the Council of Constance. The French delegation was also housed in the chapter house.

Under the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, the monastery was closed on July 27, 1785.

In the following years, businesses settled and companies were founded here.

Eberhard von Zeppelin also founded a hotel here. This is how airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin was born in the monastery building on this island.

Today, the Steigenberger Hotel Company uses the buildings as a hotel. The island belongs to the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus AG.
