There are two locks in Hohensaaten today. The Oder-Havel Canal and the Oder meet here. When a new Oder dyke was built in the 19th century, a solution had to be found to overcome the difference in height between the old and new Oder. With the construction of the first lock in Hohensaaten (eastern lock) in the years 1853 to 1858, ships on the Oder and in the Oder-Havel Canal were able to set sail again.
Soon a single lock was no longer enough. To the west of the old lock, the "Finow lock Hohensaaten" (west lock) was built in 1876. Today it connects the Oder-Havel Canal with the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthal waterway parallel to the Oder.
