"Guardians III"

These archaic-looking sculptures stand as guardians of the landscape here at X3. All three are located approximately 700 meters apart between Dreikönigsstein and Metzebacher Höhe, in positions that offer unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside. The four-meter-tall, bird-like figures watch over the plants, people, and animals of the landscape with a far-reaching perspective. The works, subtly different yet sharing the same style, clearly demonstrate inspiration from the art of indigenous cultures; the artist undertook working residencies and study trips to Africa, Arabia, Asia, and the Americas. Like the cult figures, which often depict deities, these sculptures are symbolically simplified to their essential characteristics, and it is precisely through this simplification that they gain their expressive power, immediacy, and vitality. “…time seems to have frozen in the wood carvings. The slender, upright figures are gender-neutral, and individuality is subdued. …Each one claims its own sphere of influence, yet it is only in their relationship to one another that a multitude of ambivalences emerge” (Dr. Ingrid Maut).
