The Vestingroute provides access to the most beautiful spots in the fortresses around the entire city outskirts, from high on the ramparts to low along the canals. The route also explores the vanished fortresses to the north and northwest of the city.
You can expand the route with three beautiful sub-areas: the Ketelkwaad (with play impulses) and Hamiltonpark to the west of the Majoorgracht, the Hoornwerkpark to the east and the Verdronken Weide to the south of the city.

The fortresses of Ypres are the best preserved in our country. However, they have had an eventful history.
Their story begins ten centuries ago, when the city was founded on the Ypreslee. Canals and earthen walls protected the citizens of the prosperous city. The city fortifications reached their first peak around 1390 with high walls and sturdy corner towers. Over the centuries, the fortifications were modified to handle the increasingly powerful weapons.
Around 1680, the famous French engineer Vauban converted the fortress into a huge complex with fortifications and bastions. Ypres defended the borders of the former states and was a buffer that had to endure many clashes between European royal houses. Each left its mark on the current fortress landscape, the green belt around the city centre. Many fortifications have been more or less preserved or restored.
