In the 14th century, the city of Ypres constructed the Zillebekevijver for its water supply, and this pond still supplies drinking water via a purification plant on the western bank. The 28-hectare pond, surrounded by a double row of trees, is a valuable nature reserve with water lilies and various bird species such as grebes, herons and ducks.
