The monk's church now serves as a concert and art hall.

The gigantic monk's church, with the crooked and proportionally completely questionable ridge turret, was built around 1250 on the last free piece of land in Salzwedel's old town. It is a two-nave brick hall church.

In front of the church, in addition to an iron praying mantis, which was created for Expo 2000, there is now also a gingko to be found. It was planted there for the honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel.

The monks' church was built around 1250 on the last free piece of land in Salzwedel's old town, on the border to the new town, as a monastery church for the Franciscan order founded in 1210. A first documented mention of the Franciscan monastery in Salzwedel dates from 1261. It belonged to the Saxon province (Saxonia) of the order. In 1345, a vaulted choir and a side aisle were added on the south side. The nave and aisle were vaulted. Between 1435 and 1500 the choir, nave and aisle were expanded and a rood screen was installed.

After the Reformation, the monastery fell to the town of Salzwedel. The last Franciscan living there died in 1552. The cloister, which was immediately north of the church, was used as a Latin school from then on. The church itself was converted into a Protestant church in the years 1575-1581. In 1582 an altar created in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Younger was erected in the monks' church. It depicts the parable of the workers in the vineyard from the Gospel of Matthew. Another altar from the village of Bukau, which was devastated in the Thirty Years' War, was also set up in the monks' church.

In the 19th century, the Salzwedel high school was located in the former cloister, since 1895 the town hall. Until 1920 the monks' church was a garrison church. The Bukauer Altar was erected in 1947 in Salzwedel's St. Catherine's Church. Services were held in the church until 1964. After that the church stood empty and fell into disrepair. A late Gothic door frame, bronze chandeliers and numerous organ pipes were stolen. The Cranach altar was restored and handed over to the Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum in Salzwedel in 1968. From 1984 to 1986 the monks' church was converted into a concert hall; the pulpit from 1581 was also removed. The occasion was the 21st GDR Workers' Festival, which took place in 1986 in the district of Magdeburg and thus also in Salzwedel. The organ was reopened in 2009.
