The old town is the oldest part of the city. First documented in 1122, on the occasion of a siege of the castle. After founding the new city in 1247 she remained independent. Common was the city wall, the jurisdiction and the foreign policy. The old town received the coinage in 1314. In 1713, both were united by order of the Prussian government.

The main church here is St. Mary's, was the seat of the provost (now Danneil Museum) and the old town hall is the seat of the district court. Also this district impresses with its half-timbered buildings and brick churches.

Salzwedel is not only the northernmost district town in Saxony-Anhalt, but also one of the most historic places in the state. As the political center of the unified community of the same name, the city is connected to the surrounding villages.

The town center of Salzwedel is characterized by medieval architecture, half-timbered houses on picturesque cobblestone streets and magnificent brick churches. Imposing town houses, e.g. the birthplace of Jenny Marx, the wife of Karl Marx, testify to the former Reichturm.
The North German brick Gothic left behind massive structures. During a walk along the city wall (1850 meters long) you can discover parts of the medieval castle complex, gates and towers. The half-timbered architecture dominates the old town for many centuries. More than 570 buildings make for a closed ensemble.
