The Salzwedel district of Neustadt was founded in 1247. The documented beginning of construction of St. Catherine's Church was in 1280. It was built as a parish church for the new town. Extensions were made at the beginning of the 14th century. A choir was built on the east side of the nave, which was higher than the nave. Around 1450, the entire church was extended to this height. It also received a vault. The next extensions took place in 1460. The Corpus Christi Chapel was completed in 1467. A two-story sacristy extension was built on the south side; the spire was renewed. Thus, the church had almost attained its present form. The original nine stained-glass windows in the choir, three of which have survived, also date from this period. They depict scenes from Genesis and the life of Christ. Since the Reformation came to Salzwedel, the parish has been Evangelical Lutheran.

St. Catherine's Church remained intact during World War II, but fell into disrepair in the decades that followed. The last Christmas Eve service was held in the church on Christmas Eve 1961. The church was abandoned because its walls threatened to disintegrate. After 1974, restoration of the church began with the help of numerous volunteers. On Christmas Eve 1975, services were held in St. Catherine's Church for the first time. In 1978, a new organ made by the Potsdam company Schuke was inaugurated. During the fall of communism in 1989, St. Catherine's Church was the focus of numerous protests. Even before the renovation work was completed, structural damage occurred again in 2010, forcing the closure of the west hall. The complete renovation of the west hall lasted until 2013.
