The former Freydanck villa is now the seat of the city and district library of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel. The pretty building is located directly in front of the Neuperver Tor on the Jeetze.

If you turn left behind Villa and Jeetze, in front of the Neuperver Tor, you can walk along the old city wall for a bit.

The Freydanck Villa, which had served as a daycare center until 1989, was closed for renovation and expansion, and construction was stopped immediately in 1989. It was empty. This house was debated in the city council as early as 1992; it was the property of the city. The then city councilor Sabine Spangenberg suggested converting this house into a library and the city council also spoke in favor of it. The building was placed under monument protection and the first structural tests were carried out. However, the monument preservation authority rejected its use as a library unless the statics of the ceilings and floors were adapted to the required values. As a result, the plans for the library in the villa came to nothing.

They checked here, checked there: but every other option turned out to be more expensive or just as expensive as converting the villa. And so, after the city allocated its own funds and applied for funding in the state and clarified the monument law issues, the building permit for the conversion into a city and district library was granted in October 1994.

A lot of work, a lot of money and a lot of energy went into this company. The construction took a year and a half. All of the library work, which had now withdrawn from the town hall and was in a temporary solution at Burgstrasse 4, was geared towards the construction work. Heidi Urban, the library director at the time, tirelessly supervised the ongoing work. It is largely thanks to her that the wonderful details of the villa have been preserved. For example, a wall surface of the kitchen tiles, the door panels, the fittings on the windows, the many leaded-glass flowery round windows and much more. When the construction work came to an end, the new library furniture moved in and immediately afterwards our media, i.e. books, MCs, CDs and magazines. This was a very busy time for the employees.

Even the book bus, which has been supplying the communities in the western district with literature since 1993, can park on the site and "fill up" with new media.

We were one of the first libraries in Saxony-Anhalt to use a computer program to record media loans.

The opening event took place on May 11, 1996 with many celebrities.

Built in 1904 in the Art Nouveau style. Initially a residential and commercial building, later a children's home and nursery. Today it houses the city and district library.
