At the suggestion of the merchant and cigar manufacturer Heinrich Köhler Bergmann, the fountain committee that was then convened decided to build a market fountain in honor of the Saxon royal house of Wettin. In 1902, the foundation stone was laid at approximately the same place where the former town church stood, which was destroyed in the town fire in 1832. After almost a year of construction, the fountain was inaugurated on September 6, 1903.

The fountain basin, which is still preserved today, features plant and animal motifs in the Art Nouveau style. The figure of Saxonia that once crowned the fountain is unfortunately no longer there due to it being melted down in 1942. The fountain is now lined with a group of spherical maple trees.
